The initiative by Happy FM and UT Life to save lives and to positively affect society yielded fruits over the weekend when over 130 pints of blood was collected to boost the stock of blood in the blood banks of both Korle Bu Teaching and the 37 Military Hospitals during the annual Happy FM, UT Life Blood Donation Exercise.
Held at the premises of UT Life at Kisseiman, over 250 people volunteered to donate their bloods out of which 130 pints was collected while the other volunteers were diagnosed as not medically fit to donate by medical practitioners. This resulted in the reduction of the pints of blood organizers were expecting before the exercise.
Speaking to the media after the event, the Programmes Manager of Happy FM, Kwasi Sarpong, said, ‘’even though we did not meet our target this year, we are still happy many people showed interest by coming around to donate,’’ adding that ‘’we believe the contribution of our widow’s mite to the blood bank of both public hospitals will definitely save some lives.’’ He thanked all volunteers and the general public for availing themselves and promised an improved version next year.
On his part, the Business Development Manager of UT Life, Sheriff Abudu, stated that ‘’UT Life is motivated to organize this event every year because it cares about the life of its clients, customers and the general public,’’ adding that, ‘’donating one’s blood is very important because it can one day help save the life of a loved one.’’ He attributed the low patronage of this year’s event to the day it was organized instead of the usual 25th May which is the AU Day public holiday.
He stressed that UT Life will continue to partner Happy FM to make it better next year for everyone.
The blood donation exercise lasted for about 10 hours from 7:00am to 4:00pm.
Activities included background checks, free screening and health checks for participants by qualified medical professionals from KBTH and 37.
The free breast cancer screening saw 140 women and 6 men check their breast on the day.
