GPRS launched in Upper East Region

Bolgatanga, Aug. 31, GNA – The Upper East Regional office of the Information Services Department (ISD),on Monday appealed to the Regional Coordinating Council, to provide logistics support to facilitate the public educational campaign on the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy (GPRS).

The Regional campaign, which focuses on Births and Deaths Registry, the National Health Insurance Scheme, and Election 2004 is on the theme: “Good Governance”.

Mr Akwasi Amankwah, Regional Information Officer, who made the appeal during the Regional launch of the 30 days campaign, asked the District Assemblies’ and other stakeholders to collaborate make the programme a success.

He said the GPRS, aimed at economic stability, increased productivity, employment opportunities and assistance packages to the vulnerable.

Mr Paul Alloah, Special Assistant to the Regional Minister, Mr Mahami Salifu who launched the campaign, noted that information and communication technology contributed much to national development, hence the need to expose the citizenry to such interventions.

Mr Samuel Jojo Dolphine, Regional Director of the Births and Death Department, said even though registration of births and deaths started in the mid 1960s, only few children are being registered.

This, he said, was due to the lack of motivation on the part of the public and lack of registration personnel to cover every part of the country.
