Ghana’s Minister for Roads and Highways, Governor Kwame Agbodza, has announced that the government will sign contracts for 31 major road and bridge construction projects by the end of August 2025, marking one of the most ambitious infrastructure pushes in recent years.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Thursday, July 31, Mr Agbodza confirmed that commencement certificates have already been secured for all the projects and that procurement processes are currently underway to ensure swift contractor mobilisation.
“This is not a political promise. The commencement certificates have been obtained, and we are now in the procurement process to get these contractors to site,” he stated. “These are two-year contracts, 24 months from start to finish.”
In a significant policy shift, Mr Agbodza revealed that the contracts will contain strict provisions aimed at curbing the chronic delays that have plagued past road projects. For the first time, contractors who fail to show progress within three months without justifiable cause will have their contracts terminated immediately.
“In the contract, we’ve written that if you delay for three months without justification, we’ll terminate it, no further notice,” he said firmly. “And they will be required to work 24/7. We’re not compelling anyone to take a contract they can’t deliver.”
The Minister’s remarks come at a time of growing public demand for improved road infrastructure across the country. While past efforts have been undermined by funding gaps and contractor inefficiencies, Mr Agbodza’s new approach appears to be placing accountability and speed at the centre of government delivery.
Among the projects earmarked are critical road corridors such as the Wa–Han Road, Techiman–Nkonsia–Wenchi Road, and dualisation of the Cape Coast–Takoradi Road, routes vital for trade, agriculture, and regional connectivity.
Also featured are roadworks in previously neglected areas like the Enchi–Elubo Road and Bediako Junction–Sefwi Adabokrom, as well as urban upgrades like the Sunyani and Kumasi outer ring roads.
Here are some of the major roads slated for work:
Dualisation of Winneba–Mankessim and Cape Coast–Takoradi roads
Rehabilitation of Ho–Kpetoe and Tumu–Hamile roads
Reconstruction of Dodowa–Afienya–Dawhenya and Tema–Aflao roads
Construction of the Enchi–Elubo and Dadieso–Akomtomra roads.
The government hopes this strict delivery framework complete with penalties and around-the-clock work schedules will restore public trust in Ghana’s infrastructure efforts.
