The destruction of the Central Medical storage facility is beginning to have a toll on healthcare delivery in the country as some government hospitals have run out of syringes for administering Tuberculosis vaccines to newborn babies.
Nursing mothers who are visiting the facilities for the BCG vaccine, as it is popularly known, are being turned away due to the shortage.
Starr News has learnt that the situation has persisted for more than three months.
Among the hospitals affected is the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital which does not also have some essential drugs for babies.
Doctor George Bonsu, who is in charge of national vaccination, told Starr News they are yet to take delivery of new stock after all their stored products were destroyed in the fire that gutted the Central Medical Stores.
He added that their imported stock is yet to be cleared from the harbour and until then, some hospitals will have to contend with the current shortage.
Meanwhile, deputy ranking member of Parliament’s Health Committee, Collins Nti has warned that the situation is likely to derail the fight against TB.
