Workers at Gambaga in the West Mamprusi district have called on the government to abolish the “cash and carry” system and replace it with free medical care for workers.
They said the 25,000 cedis given to each civil servant as medical allowance per year, was grossly inadequate and should be reviewed upwards.
The call was made at the second quarterly meeting of the District Council of Labour at Gambaga on Saturday at which the workers also discussed the revised draft labour bill.
The workers appealed to the government to effect payment of the recent salary increases from January, 2001 instead of May.
They contended that petroleum prices were increased in January and not in May and therefore there was no justification in implementing the new salaries from May.
