Ghanaian students in Ukraine safe- Scholarship Secretariat

Information reaching ultimate radio indicates that Ghanaian students studying in Ukraine are safe despite the political unrest in some cities in the Country.

Some students on government scholarship who were unwilling to speak on record told ultimate radio they were safe and are in constant talks with the Ghanaian embassy in Moscow that oversees Ghana’s mission in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian conflict began in February 2014 after a series of violent events in the capital of Kiev, culminated with the ousting of the then President of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych.

Hundreds of people have so far been killed and many wounded in a fight between the self-proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic (LNR) and Kiev forces, as the conflict in the eastern European country continues.

The students told Ultimate Radio Friday afternoon that foreign students were made to write their end of semester exams earlier than the normal time to allow them stay indoors and easily monitored by their respective embassies.

The president of the students association also confirmed to Ultimate Radio’s Cyril Spio that the students met over the week for a meeting in a shopping mall over the week for their regular discussions.

Speaking to Ultimate Radio, the Desk Officer for Russia and Ukraine Students at the National Scholarship Secretariat, Stephen Tekye, assured that the students were safe as the embassy was in constant touch with the students.

“We are in contact with our mission in Moscow and they oversee the welfare of students in Ukraine. They have assured us that the students are safe,” he contended.

He further assured that his outfit was still in touch with the mission and will quickly evacuate any Ghanaian student from the embattled country if any threat was imminent.
