Ghana navy arrests 15 fishermen

The Eastern Naval Command has arrested 15 fishermen for allegedly fishing with light.

Thirty-one generators and their accessories and other implements were also seized.

Lt Maxwell Asola, the Public Relations Officer for the Eastern Naval Command, briefing journalists in Tema said the fishermen were arrested at Ada in the Greater Accra Region.

Lieutenant Asola said 15 inshore motor vessels were spotted fishing by the Navy patrol team at about 21:30 hours on Monday.

He said the patrol team apprehended them since fishing in the night with light was against the maritime laws of Ghana and a search on the vessels revealed the generators and the implements.

Lieutenant Asola stated that the 15 fishermen have been handed over to the Tema Community One Police.

He gave the assurance that the Navy would continue to embark on a 24-hour patrol of the country’s territorial waters to arrest recalcitrant people flouting maritime laws.
