Ghana’s interim technical team will remain focused solely on the Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifier against Somalia, with the Ghana Football Association yet to decide whether Kim Lars Bjorkegren and his staff will continue beyond the match.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said the future of the coaching team would be determined by the committee responsible for finding a permanent head coach.
Speaking to Akoma 87.9 FM, Asante Twum said: “The main job of the interim coaches is solely to focus on the game against Somalia. Whether they will continue afterwards, I cannot say at the moment because nobody knows what tomorrow holds. It will all depend on the committee.”
Bjorkegren, a Swedish coach, is leading the temporary technical set-up, with Ibrahim Tanko and Godwin Attram appointed as his assistants. Former Ghana international goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda is serving as goalkeepers’ coach.
The appointments follow a difficult start for the Black Stars in their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. Ghana lost their opening two Group C matches against Cote d’Ivoire and The Gambia, leaving them without a point and prompting increased pressure on the GFA to appoint a substantive head coach.
The interim team is expected to take charge of Ghana’s November qualifier against Somalia while the Coach Search Committee continues its work. No indication has been given that the temporary arrangement will automatically end after that fixture, but Asante Twum said no decision had yet been taken about what happens next.
He also rejected claims that the GFA had already selected a permanent coach. Asante Twum said the speculation had been driven by the Black Stars’ recent results rather than by any confirmed appointment.
“It is not true that the FA already has a coach. These comments are a result of the Black Stars’ current performance. If we were winning, such comments would not be coming up. We believe in the competence of the committee members to do a good job for Ghana,” he added.
The committee therefore retains responsibility for identifying and recommending the substantive head coach, while the current staff prepare the squad for the Somalia match. Asante Twum did not give a timetable for when a decision on the interim coaches’ longer-term role might be made.
