Andrews Augustus Nana Akwasi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), says he will continue working until the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP)’s traditional stronghold becomes an NDC-dominated region.
The two-time regional chairman made the pledge while seeking to retain his position, saying his record in the region should earn him the support of delegates.
Nana Akwasi first became regional chairman in 2018, when the NDC held only three parliamentary seats in Ashanti Region following what he described as a heavy defeat in 2016.
“When I won the regional election in 2018, the NDC had only three seats in the region after that heavy defeat in 2016,” he told TV3’s William Evans-Nkum.
He said increasing the party’s representation had been a central target throughout his time in office.
“I vowed to increase the seats no matter what, and I promised myself I wouldn’t rest until that was achieved. In 2020, the New Edubiase seat returned to the NDC under my leadership. I felt I could do more, so in 2024 the NDC won three more seats, making it seven in all,” he added.
The NDC’s gains in 2024 took its total number of seats in the region to seven, having previously increased its representation through the return of the New Edubiase seat in 2020.
Nana Akwasi believes the party can make further progress if delegates give him another term as chairman.
He said his loyalty to the NDC, along with the work he has carried out across the region, should be reflected in the vote.
“My party rewards loyalty. In fact, some people are even surprised that I have a contest, but I tell them it is democracy and I welcome it,” he said.
“I have worked, my footprints are everywhere, and the delegates will look at that and vote massively for me to continue making the NDC a powerhouse in the opposition’s stronghold,” he added.
