GFA Launches 5th KGL U-17 Championship: A New Chapter for Ghana’s Future Football Stars

The Ghana Football Association (GFA), in partnership with the KGL Foundation, officially launched the fifth edition of the KGL Foundation Inter-Regional U-17 Colts Championship.

The launch event, held at the KGL House in Labone, Accra, was filled with optimism and pride. GFA President Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, alongside Executive Council Members and KGL Foundation officials, led the occasion, marking five years of commitment to nurturing young football talent across the country.

In his speech, President Okraku praised the KGL Foundation for standing with the GFA when few others would.
“Five years ago, when nobody in Ghana believed in the vision of the Football Association, KGL came through for us,” he said. “This tournament is more than football, it’s a celebration of youthful dreams, regional pride, and the power of the sport to bring us together.”

Since its inception in 2021, the championship has become a vital platform for scouting and developing the next generation of footballers. It’s not just about the matches, it’s about discovering raw talent, teaching discipline, and creating pathways from the grassroots to the national team.

This year’s tournament promises even more. Each of the ten Regional Football Associations will select the best U-17 players from their local colt’s leagues to represent their region. KGL is also stepping up its support, providing every team with 60 kits (30 home and 30 away jerseys), footballs, bibs, and training equipment.

Looking back, the competition has delivered thrilling moments. MAL FC took the first title in 2021. In 2022, Great Corinthians emerged victorious. The Ashanti Region claimed the trophy in 2023, while last year saw the Western Region edge out the Eastern Region 2–1 in a heated final at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence in Prampram.

As the 2025 edition kicks off, all eyes will be on which region will rise, and which young stars will make their mark on Ghana’s football future.
