GES to rename ‘Woman-no-Good’ Primary School

The Ghana Education Service (GES) said it had ordered the start of processes to rename a school called ‘Woman-no-Good’ D/A Primary School in the Amenfi West District of the Western Region.

Speaking at a workshop on Secondary Education Improvement Project for public relations officers of the GES at Larteh, in the Akwapim North District of the Eastern Region, Mr Stephen Adu, acting Deputy Director-General, in charge of Management Services, said, “Why should a school be named ‘Woman-no-Good’ D/A Primary School? I doubt if there is a queen mother there.”

“The Minister of Education drew my attention to this name and I have instructed the Regional Director to check it out and start the process of giving it a suitable name. Whatever the historical implications might be, names of this sort should not be given to schools.”

“Go out there as public relations officers to inform and educate the public on things they must do to support good quality education delivery in the country. We must not give names and make statements that have the tendency to discriminate against any section of the general public”, he added.

Some participants, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency expressed amusement at the name and called on the GES to identify institutions with similar names for renaming.
