Accra, Feb. 4, GNA – The Ga Traditional Council (GTC) on Friday pledged its support for the Accra Metropolitan Assembly in its quest to mak= e Accra one of the finest cities in Africa.
The Traditional Council said it appreciated the level of sanity in the metropolis such as the removal of traders from the streets, pavements and other walkways and the intended removal of squatters along the railway lines. Nii Kojo Ababio V, James town Mantse, said this when he led a GTC delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Accra metropolitan Chief Executive= , Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije.
The GTC also affirmed its support for President John Atta Mills for the STX project which is expected to provide houses for the security services. Nii Kojo Ababio thanked the AMA for programmes in the metropolis especially on enforcement of by-laws such as ensuring that all households have toilets by September this year, the decongestion exercise and clearing of waterways to save life and property during floods. He said the GTC was in support of the AMA’s intended removal of squatters along the railway lines because they the Ga Chiefs had not given out those lands for sale to individuals but for development of the city. The Chief said the GTC was looking forward to the day the AMA would hand over the Community Centre to the Ga Community. Nii Dodoo Nsaki II, the Otublohum Mantse, appealed to people living along the railway line to move away peacefully and make way for the Railway Development Project to give Accra a facelift and commended AMA for abolishing the shift system in the Metropolis.
He appealed to the AMA chief to continue with his positive policies to rid the Metropolis of filth and unauthorized structures to boost tourism. The GTC thanked Mr Vanderpuije for donating a set of furniture worth GH¢140,000.00 to the Council last year after some hoodlums attacked the Council and destroyed the furniture. Mr Vanderpuije thanked the chiefs for the support they had expressed fo= r the activities of the Assembly and noted that the programmes and activities of the AMA was a manifestation of the government’s 93Better Ghana” age= nda.
He said the Assembly would not relent in its efforts to bring development to the doorsteps of the ordinary Ghanaian. Mr Vanderpuije appealed to the chiefs to help in the AMA’s programme= s to educate the people on the need to have toilets in their homes and other developments initiated by the Assembly. He said the declaration of Accra as Millennium City last year goes with responsibilities adding that all the development programmes were to give Accra facelift and make it a city befitting it status.
