Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has announced a renewed commitment to power sector reforms following a high-level meeting with the Energy Minister, Hon. John Abdulai Jinapor, and key stakeholders in the energy industry.
In a post shared on his official Facebook page, Dr. Forson described the meeting as “frank and productive,” with discussions centred on addressing the urgent need for effective and sustainable solutions to strengthen Ghana’s power sector. Participants included top officials from the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), Volta River Authority (VRA), the Energy Commission, GRIDCo, and other major sector players.
The meeting acknowledged longstanding financial challenges confronting the power sector, such as legacy debts, tariff concerns, operational inefficiencies, and costly power purchase agreements. However, the focus, according to Dr. Forson, was firmly on finding a sustainable path forward.
The discussions concluded with a strong, collective commitment to take coordinated action under the Energy Sector Recovery Programme (ESRP). Priority areas include sustainable financial strategies, policy interventions, and operational reforms to ensure a reliable and affordable power supply while protecting Ghana’s broader economic stability.
