Fijai SHS Visual Arts Class of 2006 hands over fully equipped ICT laboratory

Students on the Visual Arts programme at Fijai Senior High School are set to gain improved access to digital learning after the school’s Old Students Association (FOSA) Visual Arts Class of 2006 provided a fully equipped computer laboratory.

The facility was handed over on Friday, August 21, 2026, as part of the year group’s efforts to support its former school and strengthen teaching and learning.

Richard Abbam-Berchie, Vice-President of the FOSA Visual Arts Class of 2006, said the project reflected the group’s wish to give back to the institution that had played an important role in its members’ academic and personal development.

He said Fijai SHS had not only provided the year group with academic knowledge but had also helped instil discipline, self-awareness, responsibility and preparedness for the future.

The new laboratory is intended to support the teaching of 21st-century skills, with particular emphasis on improving students’ digital literacy.

The computer laboratory is one of several projects undertaken by the alumni group to improve the school’s facilities, support students and recognise the contribution of teachers.

The group has renovated and upgraded the Visual Arts Department to create a better learning environment for students enrolled on the programme. It has also established a career and mentorship initiative, designed to give students guidance and a clearer understanding of career opportunities and future professional pathways.

In support of student welfare, the year group partnered with Inspire to Rise, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), on menstrual hygiene and health education. The initiative aims to raise awareness and provide students with information about menstrual health.

The alumni’s programme has also included activities to appreciate and recognise teachers for their commitment and service. Students have received recognition and awards intended to celebrate achievement and encourage excellence.

A lighting system has additionally been installed along the route from the school gate to the main entrance. The project is intended to improve visibility at night and strengthen the safety and security of students and teachers.

The Member of Parliament for the Sekondi Constituency, Armah Blay Nyameke, praised the group for its contribution to the development of Fijai SHS.

He called on other alumni associations in the constituency and across the Western Region to follow its example by investing in their former schools.

Mr Nyameke said closer cooperation between former students and educational institutions could help complement government efforts to address infrastructure shortages and other educational requirements, while creating greater opportunities for young people.

Fijai SHS Headmaster Kenneth Agbomadzi also thanked the FOSA Visual Arts Class of 2006 for its support.

Several long-serving teachers were honoured during the handover ceremony for their dedication and contribution to the education and development of students over the years. They received plaques and cash awards.

The projects form part of the alumni group’s wider commitment to improving the school’s learning environment, supporting student welfare and development, and acknowledging the teachers who continue to shape learners’ lives.
