Kwasi Komfo, (E/R), Sept. 2, GNA – The European Union (EU) Micro Project has spent a total of GH¢ 180,252.00 to undertake infrastructural development in the East Akyem Municipality. The projects, which were under phase one, included a three unit separate classroom blocks with offices and stores at Pano and Kukurantumi, rural clinics at Apapam and Kwasi Komfo and construction of a culvert at Osiem.
Mr Simon Asirifi, East Akyem Municipal Chief Executive, disclosed this on Wednesday at the inauguration of a Community Health Improvement Programme (CHIP) Centre, which was one of the projects at Kwasi Komfo at the cost of GH¢ 20,113.00. He said the EU assisted the assembly to construct a warehouse at Kyebi to store project materials at the cost of GH¢ 13,732.00 and also allocated a Nissan Single Cabin Pick-up to the assembly. Mr Asirifi said under the phase two of the programme, the assembly would benefit from a total of GH¢ 60,670.00 for the execution of projects which included construction of a three unit classroom block with offices and stores at Potroase and another rural clinic at Bomponso.
The MCE said the successful completion of the projects was as a result of a cost sharing phenomenon between the EU, the District Assembly and the beneficiary communities. He said the initial cost of the projects went up due to a number of factors including the delay in receipt of the Common Fund resulting in the late payment of the assembly’s contribution of 25 percent of the project cost. Other factors included the sharp increase in the cost of building materials and the slow pace at which the communities mobilized themselves to provide assistance to facilitate the completion of the projects. Mr Asirifi commended the EU for providing assistance to the municipality and other districts over the years. Ms Eunice Abuako, District Director of Health Services, said her outfit was doing everything possible to ensure that accessing health care became easy for the communities by providing nurses, midwives and community health assistance in all the health centres. She urged the people to visit the clinic with all their health related problems and called for the proper maintenance of the building to ensure its longer life span.
