EU bans popular gel nail polish ingredient TPO over safety concerns

The European Union has officially banned the use of trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide (TPO), a chemical ingredient commonly found in gel nail polishes.

TPO has long been favoured in the beauty industry for its ability to deliver a high-gloss finish and speed up drying time under UV or LED lamps.

However, the substance has raised safety concerns, leading EU regulators to prohibit its use in cosmetics and nail products.

The ban is part of the EU’s ongoing efforts to tighten restrictions on potentially harmful ingredients in consumer products.

While the move may challenge nail technicians and manufacturers who rely on TPO for its performance benefits, it is aimed at protecting consumer health in the long term.

Industry experts predict that brands will accelerate the development of safer alternatives to maintain the glossy, durable finish that gel polish users expect.

Consumers are advised to check product labels carefully to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
