‘Environmental sanitation must be made a priority’

The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Asante-Akim South, Mr De-graft Fokuo, has called for radical change of attitude towards environmental sanitation.

He said the situation where people refuse to take responsibility – indiscriminately litter and dump garbage at unauthorized points would have to stop.

He said it was time all accepted to keep their surroundings clean and not wait to be prompted.

Mr.Fokuo’s call comes on the heels of massive public response to clean-up exercises held in various communities in the area to mark the National Sanitation Day.

People across the district for hours cleared weeds, removed silt from gutters, collected polythene and other waste materials, strewn on the streets and open places.

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr. Kwaku Asante Boateng, the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Charles Oteng, and other heads of decentralized department joined in the exercise.

Zoomlion Ghana Limited was on hand to provide not only waste collection and clearing tools and equipment but to also fumigate refuse dumps.

Mr.Fokuo reminded the people that “it is in their own interest” to maintain clean and healthy surroundings to prevent diseases and added

that officers of the environmental health directorate would arrest and prosecute those who would flout sanitation bye-laws.

The DCE commended the people for the enthusiastic response to the clean-up exercise and urged that the momentum was sustained.
