Eight in court for environmental offences

The Suhum Magistrate Court presided over by Ms Naomi Akyeanu, has fined four persons GHc 120.00 each or in default three months in jail for environmental offences.

They are Alfred Tetteh, Janet Sarfo, Tamatey Agbo and Abigail Nyamekye.

The court also issued a bench warrant for the arrest of four other accused persons who were not in court for the same offence.

The accused persons were charged with indiscriminately dumping of refuse, improper channeling of waste water from their bath houses to an open spaces generating offensive odour behind other peoples premises , dumping of human excreta behind their houses and using unauthorised site as dumping place likely to cause an outbreak of an epidemic.

The convicts were also charged with failing to comply with the notice to abate the nuisances and obstructing the environmental health officers in discharging their duties.

They pleaded guilty to the charges.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Stephen Kwadjo Asante, Senior Environmental Health Officer, all the convicts lived at Brong Densuso in the Suhum Municipality and that after several environmental health education by the health officers, on July 20, health inspectors arrested the convicted persons.

Earlier, the Health Inspectors had warned the offenders to keep their surroundings clean and to clear the mess that they had created.
