Education Assessment Programme must be sustained

Mampong (Ash), August 14, GNA – Nana Otuo Acheampong, Assistant Director of Education in charge of supervision at the Sekyere West Municipal Education Office, has called for the sustenance of the National Education Assessment (NEA) Programme to help strengthen education at the basic level.

NEA is a product of the Curriculum Research Development Department (CRDD) of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) collaboration. It involves the conduct of standardized examination to test the literacy and mathematics knowledge of pupils in upper primary in selected public schools in the country.

Nana Acheampong, who spoke to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview, said the NEA was helping to strengthen the supervisory role of Headmasters to address problems in the classroom. Schools in the district that had participated in the programme include Kofiase Methodist Primary, Amoanang Basic School and Empirem Presby Primary School.

The programme, he said was helping the teachers to determine whether they were doing the proper thing and how to adopt other approaches.

The Assistant Education Director said being a mock examination to help to prepare pupils for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) it also encourages the pupils to study harder. He advised teachers to eschew lateness, drunkenness and absenteeism and to make sure that they give off their best in their chosen carrier.
