The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) is set to begin a nationwide audit of electricity meters across all of its operational areas, in a move aimed at reducing commercial losses, strengthening revenue assurance and tackling power theft.
The exercise will cover prepaid and postpaid meters, Special Load Tariff (SLT) installations and related wiring. ECG said its teams will inspect and verify the equipment to establish that metering systems are functioning properly and that electricity use is being measured and billed accurately.
The company said the public announcement constitutes official notice of the audit. It added that customers should not expect additional letters, appointment notices or advance notifications before authorised personnel visit their premises.
ECG has therefore advised customers, landlords, estate managers, property managers, facility managers and security personnel not to prevent, limit or delay access to its authorised representatives simply because no separate notification letter has been received.
The company referred customers to Regulation 4(h) of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (Customer Service) Regulations, 2020 (L.I. 2413). Under the regulation, consumers must provide a utility employee or agent with safe and reasonable access to their premises to read a meter or inspect utility equipment.
That obligation applies when the employee or agent presents a verifiable identity card and follows the access procedure set out in the utility’s Customer Charter.
ECG said every employee and authorised agent involved in the audit will carry an official ECG identification card. Customers have been encouraged to confirm the identity of field staff before allowing them into their premises.
Verification can be completed through the ECG Customer Call Centre on 0302 611 611 or by using the 226# USSD service, which is available across all mobile networks.
Customers using the USSD option should dial 226# on their mobile phones and select Option 5 – Verify Staff. They must then enter the six-digit verification code supplied by the ECG staff member.
The service will display the staff member’s full name, region and district. Customers should check that those details correspond with the person assisting them before granting access.
For additional information, ECG said customers can contact its call centre on 0302 611 611. The company can also be reached on Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok and LinkedIn through the account @ECGghOfficial.
