Dzifa Gomashie Rallies Africa at UNESCO to Prioritise Shared Heritage

Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has called on African nations to unite in advancing a collective cultural agenda during the 47th Session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Paris.

Speaking passionately at the summit, Hon. Gomashie reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to preserving its historical landmarks and cultural identity, while also urging continental cooperation through UNESCO’s African Heritage Strategy.

“We’re not just preserving the past; we’re shaping the future of African culture,” she declared, as she addressed global stakeholders in heritage conservation.

Gomashie spotlighted Ghana’s efforts to safeguard iconic sites such as the centuries-old Forts and Castles along its coastline—remnants of the country’s harrowing encounter with slavery and colonialism. According to her, these sites serve as important educational and cultural touchstones that must be preserved for future generations.

She also drew attention to projects like the Black Star Experience, an initiative aimed at deepening engagement with Ghanaian heritage and identity. The programme, she noted, is designed not just for domestic pride but to align with international standards, such as the 2030 Culture Indicators framework, which guides sustainable cultural development.

By placing emphasis on cultural heritage as a tool for continental growth, Gomashie advocated for stronger collaboration between African nations in influencing global heritage policy. Her appeal aligns with Ghana’s broader push for cultural diplomacy and leadership in heritage preservation.

Ghana’s presence in Paris signals more than participation—it represents active leadership in ensuring Africa’s historical narratives are both protected and projected on global platforms. The country’s strategy, according to the Minister, balances preservation with innovation, memory with vision.
