Mr Bathdomeo K. Nketsiah, a former fire officer, has called on commercial drivers to be disciplined and put a stop to speeding and wrongful overtaking on the roads.
He said speeding and wrongful overtaking were major contributory factors to the increase in fatal accidents on the roads.
Mr Nketsiah gave the advice at a meeting with commercial drivers at Winneba-Junction and said the fact that their profession played an indispensable role in the economic development of the country did not accord them the power to indulge in reckless driving.
“As a matter of national interest and safety of commuters, you must always strive to operate with immense attention to avoid accidents,” he said.
Mr Charles K. Okyere, Manager of the Total Fuel Distribution Company, called on drivers to exercise great care when driving to prevent accidents, especially at the weekends.
He urged commercial drivers to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol to ensure their safety for an effective and sustainable socio-economic development.
Mr Okyere drew their attention to the law that debarred drivers from using mobile phones while driving as the practice distracted their focus which could cause accidents.
He commended commercial drivers operating in the rural areas for their loyal services to the nation despite the deplorable nature of the roads.
Mr Okyere called on religious and traditional leaders to regularly educate the people on safe driving to help reduce accidents in the country.
