Driver’s mate fined for stealing

Anord Kofi, a 23 year-old driver’s mate, who stole assorted mobile phone rechargeable cards worth GH¢ 237.50 was on Tuesday fined GH¢1,200.00, by a Cape Coast Magistrate Court or in default serve six months imprisonment.

Anord pleaded guilty to the charge of stealing and implored the court to have mercy on him.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Charles Anku told the court presided over by Mr. Kwaku Ohemeng Mensah that the complainant, Ms. Mercy Baidoo, owns a grocery shop near Adisadel, a suburb of Cape Coast.

He said on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at about 08:00 hours, the complainant left her nine year-old daughter in charge of the shop whilst she attended the funeral of a relative.

He said Anord went to the shop to buy pure water but as soon as the girl turned to the fridge to get him the water, he stole a container with the rechargeable cards, worth GH¢186.00 together with a cash of GH¢36.30p cash, which was on the counter and took to his heels.

Chief Inspector Anku said an eye witness who saw Anord stopping a taxi to escape raised the alarm and neighbours helped in arresting Anord and handed him over to the police.**
