County Executive Cuts Ribbon for New African Cultural and Resource Center

Our hearts are full and U made it happen!!!

On Sunday, June 27, 2010, the African community gathered to witness an historic event, the opening of the African Cultural and Resource Center (ACRC) in Montgomery County.

The Volta Association and Metropolitan Community Development Corporation (MCDC), in collaboration with the Montgomery County Executive’s African Affairs Advisory Group, hosted the opening of the African Cultural and Resource Center (ACRC) in the Universal Evangelical Church Building at 1523 Forest Glen Road, Silver Spring, MD.

ACRC responded to the realization that there is a need to empower the community and ensure adequate awareness of and access to the available resources in the County. The ACRC is dedicated to the effective delivery of services to meet the unique needs of the community and providing culturally competent programs and services to help the community become self-sufficient.

County Executive Ike Leggett, who spoke at the event, emphasized, among other things, the strength in diversity and the importance of preserving the African cultures. Surrounded by enthusiastic elders and leaders of the community, he cut the ribbon and then toured the African Cultural & Resource Center (ACRC).

ACRC will be operated by nonprofits, and staffed by a skilled, knowledgeable, and culturally competent bilingual (French and English) person.

Established Non-Profits are encouraged to join in this exciting endeavor. For more information contact Edwin Agbonyitor, 301-922-1262, [email protected] or Amie Jallah, 301-495-8970, [email protected]
