Cop remanded for stealing

A police constable attached to the visibility department of the Takoradi district police command and two others have been remanded into police custody by a Takoradi circuit court for alleged stealing.

Constable Osman Yahaya and two other civilians were arrested last Saturday for allegedly stealing a car engine and a gear box.

According to sources, the police constable logged in before moving to his duty post only to be arrested later for allegedly stealing the vehicle parts.

DAILY GUIDE gathered that Constable Osman Yahaya and the other two alleged accomplices hired a taxi and asked the driver to convey the engine and the gear box from Tanokrom near Takoradi to the Central Police Station, also in Takoradi.

After the driver had loaded the items into the cab, Constable Osman Yahaya allegedly directed him to change direction and rather send the items to Kokompe.

The change in the destination made the driver suspicious and inquired from the policeman why the sudden change in direction, but the cop purportedly asked him to drive on and stop asking questions.

The taxi driver then conveyed the items to Kokompe where the gear box and the engine were sold for GH¢160.00 after which the policeman and the two civilians boarded the taxi back to Takoradi.

Suspecting that Constable Osman Yahaya and his cohorts stole the items, the taxi driver hatched a plan to have the police constable and the others arrested.

The cabbie stopped on the way back to Takoradi and acted as if he was delivering a message to someone.

He came in contact with two immigration officers and reported the matter to them.

The immigration officers then rushed on the cop and his supposed accomplices, arrested them and sent them to the Takoradi police station.

Supt Peter Ofori Donkor, Takoradi District Police Commander, confirmed to DAILY GUIDE that Constable Yahaya was attached to the visibility department of the Takoradi police command.

He indicated that the court had remanded the miscreants into police custody pending further investigations to reappear on November 17, 2015.
