A prominent Indian criminal lawyer from Punjab and former Additional Advocate General of Punjab, Mr Harpreet Sandhu, has paid a working visit to the Hon. Lady Chief Justice, Mrs. Justice Georgina T. Wood at her office in Accra.
Mr. Harpreet Sandhu was accompanied by Mr Amar Deep S. Hari, the Chief Executive Officer of IPMC, during which they presented to the Chief Justice a book by the former titled ‘Comparative Study on German and India Laws’.
Chief Justice Wood acknowledged the professionalism of the Indian Judiciary which is home to the world’s largest democracy, and gave her blessing for the compilation of a comparative study of the legal systems of Ghana and India.
She thanked the CEO of IPMC for agreeing to sponsor the project.
After their interaction with the Chief Justice, the two Indian delegates visited the Supreme Court to witness a sitting of the court where they were briefed by the President of the panel, His Lordship Justice William Atuguba.
They were later presented a copy of the Annual Report of the Judicial Service. Mr Harpreet Sandhu also presented a copy of his book to the Supreme Court Library. Mr Amar Deep S. Hari, the CEO of IPMC, outlined the inherent benefits of court automation and assured the Judiciary of his support for the deepening of that initiative.
Later in a presentation to the Attorney General & Minister for Justice, Honorable Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong and in the accompanying presence of the Deputy Minister of Energy, Hon. Benjamin Dagadu, Mr. Amar Deep S. Hari stressed that the intended comparative study of the Ghanaian and Indian legal systems must focus on the business laws of the two countries with a view to building investor confidence particularly among Indian investors interested in coming to Ghana to do business.
Mrs. Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong mentioned that the study would be of great benefit to the jurisprudence of India and Ghana and provide a better understanding of the laws of the two countries.
Mr. Harpreet Sandhu is expected to complete the study in time for the India-Africa summit scheduled to take place in India from 26th – 30th, October 2015.
