College of Education appeals for increase in quota

Akropong, June 30, GNA – Mr Samuel Ofori Aboagye, Acting Principal, Presbyterian College of Education, has appealed to the Ministry of Education to increase the quota of students the institution can enrol.

This he said would step up the number of teachers produce each year at the school from 300 to at least 500, adding: 93This is against the background that we have shortage of teachers in several schools in Ghana.”

Mr Aboagye made the appeal at the College’s fourth graduation ceremony at Akropong.

He requested the Vice Chancellor, University of Cape Coast, who is also the Chairperson of the Professional Board of the Institution of Education, at the academic facility to consider the reduction of the number of subjects being offered in the Colleges of Education in line with the universities.

Mr Aboagye urged the graduates to work hard and stay as ambassadors of the college.

In a speech read on his behalf, Professor Mahama Duwiejua, Executive Secretary of the National Council for Tertiary Education, noted that the country’s teacher training colleges had been upgraded to colleges of education to train teachers to the diploma level.

He said the colleges were expected among other things to upgrade the competence of the existing staff and attract the right calibre of teaching personnel and students and upgrade the physical and academic infrastructure to meet the demands of the school.

Prof Duwiejua noted that the University of Education, Winneba and University of Cape Coast were running various postgraduate programmes that were intended to upgrade tutors of the colleges of education to the required standards and asked teaching personnel of the college to take advantage of the courses.

He advised the graduates to do away with negative acts such as laziness, absenteeism, lateness and drunkenness.
