Chiefs in Tamale Metropolis asked to promote peace

Tamale, April 30, GNA – Chiefs in the Tamale Metropolis have been asked to promote peace and abide by the country’s laws for the development of the area.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Agwuntogebe Awuni, Northern Regional Police Command, made the call at meeting with the chiefs to discuss the security situation in the area, in Tamale on Thursday. He said that controversies arouse over traditional drumming at dawn by sections of the chieftaincy divide, which nearly resulted in clashes between some factions in the metropolis.

ACP Awuni appealed to the chiefs and people to stop the drumming until further notice to prevent heightening of passions. Naa Henry Abukari Kaleem, Dakpem Zobogu, spokesperson for Dakpema Naa, commended the Police for initiating measures to avert conflicts in the metropolis.

He advised traditional rulers in the area to follow laid down customary practices in addressing grievances.

The spokeperson for the Buglana Naa Mohammed Alhassan said the issue of traditional drumming had been referred to the regent of Dagbon for redress. He pledged the chiefs’ cooperation with the Police in ensuring peace in the area.
