CGD undertakes clean up in Nima

Accra, July 10, GNA – A heavy downpour on Saturday morning nearly disrupted a cleanup exercise at Nima, a suburb of Accra organised by the National Secretariat for the Campaign for Greater Discipline (CGD). Volunteers from the Ayawaso Red Cross Society Chapter “A”, Osu Presbyterian Secondary School and the Nima Market Women Association, defied the rain to clear gutters choked with silt, sweep the street-side-walk and removed garbage from the Nima Roundabout to the overhead bridge and the market.

Ms Otiko Djada, Special Coordinator of the Organisation, said one of the aims of CGD was to sensitise the community about the need to adopt good personal and environmental cleanliness.

She announced plans by the Organisation to train volunteers to facilitate community education on sanitation issues.

Sheikh Shareau Tajudeen, Assemblyman for Nima East Electoral Area, expressed disappointed about the low turnout of the community, which he partly blamed on the early morning rain. He said information on the exercise was sent out on Thursday, adding that, he expected a greater number of people than those who participated in the exercise.

However, many people in the community the GNA spoke to including the former Assemblywoman for the area, Madam Agnes Amoah, said they did not have any idea about the exercise.
