Aflao, July 6, GNA – Mr Francis Asigbe, an official of the Customs Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS), is being held in police custody at Keta over his alleged involvement in a shooting incident in which a Togolese national was killed and two others were injured on Tuesday between Akanu, Border Post and Dzodze, in the Volta Region. The deceased has been named as Kwabla Havor and the injured Shetu Nuridin, said to be in critical condition at the Volta Regional Hospital in Ho and Daniel Dademor, who is receiving treatment at the Saint Anthony’s Hospital at Dzodze.
A source close to the Police told the GNA that a vehicle loaded with imported goods from Lome Togo was on Tuesday morning certified and cleared at the Akanu Border Post on the Ghana-Togo frontier. He said shortly afterwards, Mr Asigbe and some of his colleague CEPS officials intercepted the same vehicle as it was being loaded with some smuggled goods at a spot between the border post and Dzodze. The source said in an attempt to impound the goods and the vehicle, the CEPS officials ordered the deceased, who Asigbe had recognized as the driver in charge of the vehicle, to drive the vehicle back to the Akanu Border Post for re-examination.
The deceased who denied being the driver of the vehicle engaged Asigbe in a struggle during which he (Asigbe) opened fire hitting the deceased in the throat resulting in his instant death, while some stray bullets hit Nuridin and Dademor, who were among the onlookers. Mr Aikins Kofi Darkey, Keta Divisional Police Commander confirmed the story, but declined to make any comments. CEPS officials at the Aflao Collection, under which Akanu falls, were tight lipped over the incident.
