BNI questions NDC parliamentary candidate

Parliamentary Candidate for the Tema West Constituency, on the ticket of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2012 general election, George Medie, has been dragged before the Tema Regional Police Command and the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for questioning.

The NDC faithful is alleged to have been orchestrating a demonstration against the nomination of Mr Isaac Asia Odamtten as the Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive

Medie is one of 3 persons who were shortlisted for the position of Mayor.

The police told Peace FM News that they had been tipped-off that George Medie was planning a demonstration together with other disgruntled NDC activists, hence the decision to invite him to the community police station for questioning.

“On Friday, again the BNI also invited me to their offices for the same alleged crime” Mr Medie, who denied his involvement in any plan to organize a demonstration against the president’s nominee, said. He, however, stressed that it was “within anybody’s right (to organize a protest march) though I have no link with the youth who attempted going on demonstration”.

“The police claimed I have been planning a demonstration, when I was even out of town…if people are peeved and want to do anything I’m not responsible, “he told Peace FM News.

On that same day, two NDC youth activists Eric Oklu and Prosper Aidan of the NDC’s Zongo for Mahama Group were picked up by the Tema police when they had congregated at the TMA together with about thirty other youth.

The two were picked up around midday and were released at about 5pm. They told Peace FM News in an interview that the police were simply harassing them and that “its party matter so they should leave us alone”.

Meanwhile, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Maxwell Atingane has advised that anyone who wants to demonstrate must comply with the Public Order Act.
