Black Stars Beat Mali To Boost World Cup Hopes

Ghana’s Black Stars returned to winning ways in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Mali at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday.

Alexander Djiku’s strike early in the second half proved decisive, lifting Ghana three points clear at the top of Group I and easing the pressure that had mounted after last week’s draw with Chad.

Head coach Otto Addo rang the changes, handing starts to Djiku, Mohammed Salisu, Thomas Partey and Kwasi Sibo. The first half offered little in the way of clear chances, though Antoine Semenyo came close after fine work from Mohammed Kudus on the right.

The breakthrough came just three minutes after the restart. Caleb Yirenkyi rattled the crossbar before Jordan Ayew’s follow-up cross was met by Djiku, who slotted home to send the 40,000 fans in Accra into raptures.

Mali responded with waves of pressure, forcing goalkeeper Benjamin Asare into key saves, while Partey and Salisu made crucial interventions to preserve Ghana’s lead. Despite a nervy finish, the Black Stars held on to secure all three points.

The victory not only restores belief but also puts Ghana in pole position in the group, ahead of Madagascar and Comoros, as the race for a place at the 2026 World Cup intensifies.
