Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren says Ghana “deserve more” from their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations campaign, as the team gears up for a decisive final group match against Tanzania.
After earning just one point from their opening two matches, an opening defeat to South Africa followed by a draw with Mali, the Queens find themselves bottom of Group C. Yet, despite the difficult start, their path to the quarterfinals remains in their own hands.
“We are disappointed with one point. We think that we deserve more,” Bjorkegren told reporters at a pre-match press conference in Casablanca. “Now we have everything in our own hands, and that is to make sure to win the game tomorrow.”
A victory against Tanzania, who are also chasing their first knockout-stage appearance, will see the Black Queens progress to the next round.
Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah, who joined her coach at the press briefing, echoed the team’s confidence heading into the must-win encounter.
“Throughout the whole team, there’s positivity. We believe in ourselves,” she said. “We know we have got the quality. We just have to go out and show them.”
The 2024 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, hosted in Morocco, has been fiercely contested, and Group C remains wide open heading into the final round of games. A draw will not be enough for Ghana, whose tournament hopes depend on nothing less than a win.
Kick-off against Tanzania is scheduled for 20:00 local time at Stade Mohammed V, with fans back home in Ghana hoping for a resurgence from their national side.
