Bawku (U/E), Oct 7, GNA – Mr. David Moli Belko, 64, the Co-Chairman of the Bawku Inter-Ethnic Peace Committee who died on September 30, was buried in Bawku his hometown on Monday. Mr. Belko was first admitted at the Bawku Presbyterian Hospital but his health deteriorated and was transferred to the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital where he died.
The Upper East Region Minister, Mr. Mark Owen Woyongo, expressed condolences on behalf of the government and citizens of the Upper East Region especially the people of Bawku and said the deceased was a good instrument for the maintenance of peace in Bawku.
He said even though Mr. Belko’s death was a big blow to the peace process in Bawku, his contributions towards attaining good dialogue between the two ethnic groups remained indelible in finding lasting solution to the conflict.
In a sermon the Parish Priest of the St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Bawku, Rev Monsignor Camillo Sarko, said man was brought onto the earth to fulfil certain obligations directed by God and added that the task of service to humanity was one of the primary assignments that the deceased was tasked to perform.
He said Mr. Belko’s contribution in bringing peace to Bawku was a duty fulfilled and that the remaining task should be continued by all the players to bring lasting peace to the area.
Rev Monsignor Sarko urged the mourners who had come from all over the country including human rights activists not to relent in bringing peace to Bawku. “The death of Mr. Belko is a divine test for the committee and other well meaning and peace loving people in the country,” he said. Mr. Belko attended Wesley Teacher training College retired from the Ghana Education Service as an assistant Director.
