Bawumia Remembers Chief Dombo

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, running mate to Nana Akufo-Addo, has paid glowing tribute to Chief Simon Diedong Dombo, a founding member of the Danquah Dombo Busia tradition, for blazing the trail for the current rank and file of the NPP to follow and benefit from.

Dr. Bawumia made the comments on Friday in Duori when he visited the home and tomb of the late Dombo who was also the Duori Naa.

Speaking at the tomb of the former leader of the United Party, Dr. Bawumia said “for me it’s really a spiritual experience because one of the founding fathers of the NPP as we see it today is Chief Dombo. They started the Northern People’s Party which emerged as the largest opposition party after the legislative elections in the 1950s before independence. So everything that we are able to do for Ghana in the New Patriotic Party today, we owe it to Chief Dombo and his compatriots. In coming to the Upper West therefore, no visit would have really been complete politically without coming to pay homage to our father, Chief Dombo, the Duori Naa”

Dr. Bawumia was happy to have met the family members including a son of the late Dombo who incidentally happens to be the parliamentary candidate of the NPP in Jirapa, Edward Dombo and thanked the family for the welcome accorded him and his team.

Dr. Bawumia pledged that the NPP when elected would do everything to continue in the footsteps of the late Dombo and his compatriots especially in the area of seeking development for the Northern people.

“They started some very good work in the 1950s and we are the beneficiaries of the work that they did in the 1950s, including advocating for free education for northern Ghana. The Northern People’s Party founded by our late father Dombo and his compatriots were particular about the development of the north and strived to see the North develop and also bridge the gap between the south and the north bridged; we are really humbled. We hope that we can be worthy of their good sacrifice and we hope to continue from where they left off, when Nana Akufo-Addo is elected as president come December,” he said.
