Sekondi, April 27, GNA – Mr Thomas Insaidoo, Western Regional Fisheries Officer, on Wednesday advised fishermen not to rely on the light attraction device to improve their catch.
Speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Sekondi, Mr Insaidoo said the acceptable method of improving fish catch was “the use of mesh net with the size of not less than one inch”. He said the ban on the light attraction device was still in force adding that the device would be confiscated from any fisherman caught using it.
Mr Insaidoo pointed out that the ban on the use of the device took effect from February last year and said that the Fisheries Law also prohibits the use of any device that attracted fish.
He said the reason for the ban was that the device attracted fishes of all sizes, which could lead to the depletion of the country’s fish stock.
Mr Insaidoo said Ghana Navy had confiscated generators and light attraction device from a number of fishermen.
