Aviation Authorities Extend Hand To Striking Controllers

Accra, (Greater Accra) 4 Nov. The management of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has re-iterated its preparedness to hold dialogue with the Air Traffic Controllers who have embarked on an industrial action to back their demands for improved service conditions. The Director-General of GCAA, Wing Commander Andy Mensah announced this at a press conference to throw more light on the situation and called on the controllers to be mindful of the fact that management is dealing with the entire work force and cannot treat their demands in isolation. He, however, said management is aware of the sensitive nature of their work and has accorded them their due recognition in accordance with labour regulations. He told the striking workers that their demands are beyond what the Authority can cope with, reminding them of the repercussions of such demands on the labour front and the national economy. Wing Commander Mensah said GCAA cannot compromise on its international reputation it has built over the years. He expressed the hope that the Controllers would review their stand and allow negotiations to begin to resolve the impasse amicably. He assured airline operators and the travelling public of the competence of the personnel manning Ghana’s airspace, describing the calibre of the personnel as “beyond reproach”.
