Ashanti Neighbourhood Watch calls for support

Kumasi, July 11, GNA – The Neighbourhood Watch Committee in the Ashanti Region has appealed to metropolitan and district assemblies for support in the form of remunerations and logistics to enable it deliver effectively.

Making the appeal through the GNA in Kumasi on Tuesday, Mr Abdullai Adams, Regional Organiser said the support would go a long way to motivate members, who on voluntary basis assisted the police to combat crime in the neighbourhoods.

He disclosed that the committee succeeded in arresting fifteen armed robbers and 64 pick pockets from January to June this year, but most members operating in crime-prone areas like Asawase, Race Course and Adum areas in Kumasi, had been demoralized and withdrawn their services. Members, who did not take any money for their services, send criminals to the police station at their own expenses, he added. Mr Abdullai also called on NGOs and other charitable organisations to assist the committee in cash and kind to boost the morale of members to help reduce the current spate of criminal activities in the communities. 11 July 11, 2006
