Denu (V/R), Jan. 31, GNA – An 860 million cedis school block financed by Management of Diamond Cement Ghana Limited (DCGL) for the Denu Roman Catholic Church basic schools was inaugurated at Denu in the Ketu District on Monday.
The people assisted with communal labour for the 10 room two-storey block with a detached eight-seater water closet and a six chamber urinal.
They initiated the project in 1995 but was abandoned for lack of funds at the foundation stage.
Mr Joseph Nayan, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, inaugurating the project, reiterated Government’s recognition of the importance of education in the socio-economic development of the country. He said the project was an example of public-private sector co-operation in the Government’s development efforts. Mr Nayan noted that efforts to develop the education sector were not enough to make the desired impact expected, therefore, the gesture was ideal.
He appealed to parents to take advantage of the Capitation grant and the free feeding scheme to send their children to school. Mr Nayan advised teachers and pupils to work harder to improve on their performance.
He commended individuals and institutions including the Keta/Akatsi Diocese of the Catholic Church and the Ketu District Assembly for their support to complete the project.
Mr John Batel, Chairman of the company, said the project as well as others including the provision of potable water to some communities and a recreational park built for nearby communities were in fulfilment of its social corporate responsibility to the communities. He announced that the company had donated 1,000 bags of cement to the Ghana Police Service to build a district police headquarters at Aflao and rehabilitation works at other stations, 300 bags to Penyi Primary School and 100 bags to Adafienu Amalgamated Basic School. Mr Batel was installed Development Chief by the chiefs and people of the area at the function.
Togbe Raphael Kpornyo, a traditional ruler on behalf of the community, appealed to the assembly to rehabilitate the Denu town roads. Thirteen members of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education led by the Member of Parliament of Ketu South, Mr Albert Zigah attended the function.
