Akropong School for the Blind grateful for School Bus

Authorities at the Akropong School for the Blind have expressed their gratitude to Starr 103.5 FM for bringing to the attention of the government their dire need of a school bus, which was immediately addressed.

The headmistress of the school Mahela Narh has been lamenting over government’s inability to allot them one of the 500 buses which were distributed to schools and educational institutions. Madam Narh said she was disappointed following the development since the school has been in dire need of vehicles to facilitate students’ movement among others.

A few days after sharing her concerns with Starr News’ Josephine Asabea Akonor, the government invited them over to Accra to pick a new bus to help chauffeur the students to their B.E.C.E centres and other related activities.

Madam Narh was full of praise for EIB Network’s flagship station – Starr FM – and called on other media houses to give equal attention to the deprived in society.

“It was a wonderful last minute surprise, and we are so thankful to Starr FM for making our voices heard and for the government to come to our aid, you people have really helped us,” Madam Narh told Akonor after receiving the keys to the bus.

She added: “We are overjoyed and so grateful to the government too for the support. If it wasn’t the support, most of our children would have ended up on the streets and because of the intervention we are able to take care of them.”

Meanwhile, Madam Narh has also expressed worry over the inadequate feeding grant from government which is compelling them to live on charity. According to her, the Ghc3.30 as grant for each student daily is not forthcoming. She said the school is always in trouble with their suppliers because of the huge arrears with government.

She made this known when a delegation from the Living Streams Baptist Church spent Father’s Day with the students of the school. The church presented assorted items to alleviate their plight and promised to make it an annual affair.
