Akyem Oda (E/R), Oct. 03, GNA – An acute water shortage has hit Akyem Oda New Town for the past two weeks with the situation seriously hampering social and economic activities in the area. The situation has compelled the residents to rely on water from hand-dug wells and the Birim River for their domestic use. The Birim River for instance has been polluted by years of mining activities.
The residents have appealed to the Ghana Water Company take the necessary steps to address the situation to prevent the outbreak of an epidemic.
Ms Akosua Asante, a 40-year-old porridge seller, told the Ghana News Agency that she was being compelled to wake up as early as 0300 hours daily to search for water for domestic use. Mrs Christiana Agyare, Deputy District Manager of the GWC, said the shortage was as a result of the breakdown of a water-pumping machine serving those areas.
She assured residents that mechanics from Koforidua had been invited to fix the machine.
