The Abossey Okai Spare Parts Dealers Association has announced plans to enforce the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre (GIPC) Act, 2013, by ensuring that non-citizens do not engage in petty trading in markets, including Abossey Okai.
According to the Association’s Director of Communications, Takyi Addo, the move aims to protect local businesses from unfair competition.
The association cited Section 27(1) of the GIPC Act, which prohibits foreigners from participating in petty trading, hawking, or selling goods in stalls and markets. Despite this law, many non-Ghanaians continue to operate in these spaces, undermining the livelihoods of local traders and weakening indigenous entrepreneurship.
“We believe the time has come to uphold the law and safeguard local enterprise from unlawful competition,” the association stated.
They emphasized that their action is not against foreign investment in Ghana but rather a call for compliance with the country’s trade laws.
The group has called on relevant state institutions and stakeholders to support their initiative, which seeks to preserve the integrity of local trade and secure the future of Ghanaian businesses.
