Abortion surges in Amansie West

Manso-Nkwanta (Ash), Feb 7, GNA – The Amansie West District Directo= r of Health Services, Mr Joseph Adomako, has complained about the surge in abortion cases in the area, particularly among teenage girls. The health facilities saw 330 cases in 2010 as against the previous year’s figure of 256, he said.

During the same period, the number of still births rose to 28 from 19 and this he blamed on delays in reporting to the hospitals and clinics for supervised delivery, the bad nature of the road network and lack of transport.

Mr Adomako, who was speaking at an end-of-year performance review meeting of the health directorate at Manso-Nkwanta, said there was marginal reduction in buruli ulcercases. It dropped from 25 in 2009 to 22 last year. There was also significant decline in measles infection with the district recording 616 cases in 2010 as against 706 cases in 2009. Mr Adomako identified the lack of accommodation for health personnel and the poor roads as major challenges that needed to be tackled to enhance quality health care delivery.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Charles Oti-Prempeh, gave high marks to the health workers for their hard work and professionalism in the face o= f daunting challenges. He said the district assembly would do everything to create the right environment to aid their smooth operation.
