Abokobi to build waste recycling plant

Mr John Quao Sackey, the Abokobi Municipal Chief Executive, has said all hands must be on deck in finding a lasting solution to the waste management problem in the country.

He said all landfill sites for refuse in the Greater Accra Region were full and that it was about time the country found a scientific way of disposing of liquid and solid wastes by turning them into profitable use.

Mr Sackey said this to the GNA in an interview after he and his officers had met officials of the Gbi-Hanjer (Ghana) Limited, a subsidiary of an India-based Hanjer Biotech Energies, a waste management company.

The company is finalizing private/public partnership document with the Assembly to enable them install a 2000 metric ton per day solid waste recycling plant at Danfa in the Ga East Municipality.

Mr Sackey said the waste could be processed into biogas to generate energy to augment the country’s power supply and also produce manure to reduce the importation of fertilizer.

He appealed to the Ministries of Works and Housing, Tourism and Creative Arts and Food and Agriculture to support the Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies in ensuring that the environment was clean to woo investors into the country.

Mr Geoffrey S.Y. Cofie, Acting Managing Director of Gbi-Hanjer (Ghana) Limited, said the project would serve as a single point of reference for an Integrated Multi Product Waste Recycle and Resource Recovery Project in the country.

He said the project would help in reducing air pollution, health problems around the solid waste dumping sites and all products extracted and processed would be eco-friendly.

Mr Cofie said the project was expected to provide employment for 1,000 Ghanaians and expressed gratitude to the MCE and the assembly for helping the company to acquire land for the project.
