Court jails farmer six years for logging in forest reserve

Akim Oda (E/R), Feb. 29, GNA – A magistrate’s court at Akim Oda on Friday jailed a 73-year-old farmer six months in hard labour for illegally felling trees in a forest reserve.

Kofi Nunu, a resident of Akim Achiase, pleaded guilty to illegally felling trees from the Oboyow Forest Reserve at Osorase. Police Inspector Kwaku Appiah told the court, presided over by Mr Albert Owusu-Annor, that on February 21, this year, Nunu was arrested during swoop by a Forest Commission patrol team that had been tasked to check illegal activities in the forest.

Inspector Appiah said the Akim Oda Police was mounting a search for a chainsaw operator, known to have assisted Nuhu in the illegal felling. The estimated cost of trees logged by them was put at GHc3,260.80
