Repeal criminal Libel – Tribunal Chairman

Cape Coast (C/R), May 20, GNA – Mr. Justice Nana Baffour Adjie, Chairman of Central Regional Tribunal on Saturday, called for the repeal or amendment of the criminal libel law.

He noted that this would enhance press freedom and facilitate objective reporting of national issues particularly during campaigns to ensure peaceful, free and fair elections.

Justice Baffour Adjie was speaking at a forum to mark World Press Freedom Day organised by the Central Regional branch of the Ghana Journalist Association in Cape Coast.

It was on the theme “Enhancing Press Freedom for Free, Fair and Peaceful Election”. He called on Parliament to take a critical look at the law and to act in the interest of the nation.

Mr Osei Kodwo, Regional Co-ordinator of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), asked the media to show decorum in handling political issues and said journalists should avoid volatile statements that could lead to violence.

Mr George Percy Ashong, Municipal Chief Executive said the ability of the media to publish news and opinion without being controlled by government is a major prerequisite for the peace and stability. He called on the media to place national interest above all other things in the discharge of their duties.
