Law to target group hunters as prime suspects

Ho, Jan. 22, GNA – Mr Joy Agbleze, Divisional Fire Officer of the Ghana National Fire Service, said on Monday that Ghana required a law that would specifically target group hunters as prime suspects for setting bushfires.

Mr Agbleze told the GNA in an interview that the ease with which group hunters come by game in the aftermath of bushfires provided the motivation for them to set such fires. He said group hunters have always escaped the law by denying they had set such fires though everything pointed to them as the ones with the motivation to do so.

“The menace of bushfires should be tackled with the same seriousness as armed robbery because such fires cause devastating and irreplaceable harm to many people.”

He said the Ho Municipality has experienced six domestic fires, seven major bushfires and one fire arising from a motor accident. Mr Agbleze said the domestic fires resulted from lighted candles as a result of the power rationing. 22 Jan 07
