Leklebi-Duga (V/R), Feb 26, GNA – Forty-six persons including six students who, in diverse ways, assisted in the development of the Leklebi Secondary school were presented with special awards to climax the Founder’s Day celebration of the School on Saturday. The recipients described as Great Founders of the institution included Professor Anthony C. Kumah, a lawyer and Mr Maurice Fie a retired educationist.
Addressing a grand durbar of chiefs and people, the Hohoe District Chief Executive, Mr John Peter Amewu, appealed to parents to take advantage of the Capitation Grant and send their children to school.
He said the best investment parents could make in their children was education.
Mr Amewu urged parents to enrol their children in school adding that the new education programme also ensures the provision of one decent meal for pupils each day while in school. He said five primary schools in the Hohoe District were benefiting from the pilot programme. On the President’s Special Initiative on Distant Education Programme, Mr Amewu said the assembly has procured 33 television sets and DVDs for distribution to schools. Efforts are also underway to connect all second cycle schools to the Internet as a means of promoting Information Communication Technology (ICT) in schools.
He commended the Founders of the school for their foresight and initiative.
“You should not relent in your effort in ensuring that the school becomes one of the best in the region in the very near future. I hope your original vision to bring development to the communities through education does materialize,” he said. Mr Thomas Nelson Odikro, the Headmaster of school, in his report enumerated problems facing the school.
He said the school lacked bungalows for teachers, dormitories for boys and girls and transport and computers and appealed to the government, organizations and individuals to assist. He said the school which 354 had an enrolment of 41 students in 2001 now has 354 students.
Mr Odikro commended the PTA for the immense contribution towards the improvement of facilities in the school. He commended the Apoti family of Leklebi-Duga for releasing 97 acres land for the establishment of the school.
Mr Anthony Debra, the Project Manager of the GETFund, said the fund had set aside 2.5 billion cedis to build a girls’ dormitory for the school. Mr Joseph Z. Amenowode, the Member of Parliament for Hohoe South, said the government was trying its best to improve education and called on the people in the area to contribute to supplement government efforts. Togbe Agboka VI, the Paramount Chief of the Leklebi Traditional Area, appealed to the government to help solve the problems facing the school.
