Mobilize rural dwellers to form co-operatives

Awutu-Obrachire(C/R), May 21, GNA – A Director of the National Commission for Civic Education, Mr E. T. Mensah, has called on District Assemblies Unit Committees to encourage the jobless youth in rural communities to form co-operatives.

This would enable them to secure loans for poverty reduction and other micro credit initiatives to establish agriculture and other ventures.

Mr Mensah, Director in-charge of the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District, said the move would stimulate the interest of the youth, particularly the jobless graduates from the various agricultural colleges to enter farming to contribute towards national development. He was addressing Assembly and Unit Committee members and other stakeholders in and around Awutu-Obrachire on matters that affected the well being of unemployed youth in rural areas. The NCCE District Director expressed the hope that the formation of such viable economic ventures would ensure the prompt and easy settlement of poverty alleviation and micro credit facilities being operated by the Government through Agriculture Development Bank and the Rural Banks.

Mr. Mensah asked members of District Assembly and Unit Committees to regularly organize public to educate the people on decisions so that the electorate do feel isolated.

Such meetings, the District Director said, would enable the stakeholders especially the assembly members gather ideas and suggestions for discussion, possible adoption and implementation. “This way, the people would feel the real impact of the grassroots democracy and team up with their assembly members and other key stakeholders in government to enhance development in rural communities,” Mr. Mensah said.
