Legon, May 17, GNA – A 27 year-old unemployed Amidu Sani who stole four mobile phones belonging to students who were writing examination at the K.A.B. Jones Quartey building complex at the University of Ghana, Legon, has been sentenced to one year imprisonment by the Madina Magistrate Court Grade One, presided by Mrs. Beatrice Darko. Police Chief Inspector Ebenezer Darko told the court that on May 5, 2005 Amidu was arrested at one of the examination centres after he had stolen one of the bags on the veranda belonging to Miss Peggy Ansah Asiedu who was taking a paper.

After carrying the bag to one of the lavatories he begun emptying the contents but a Security Officer pounced on Amidu and arrested him after he had removed the lady’s mobile phone and placed it in his pocket.

When Amidu was sent to the Legon Security Charge-Office for interrogation, the Chief of Security Officer, Major (Rtd) Steve Adane Mensah told him that on the 2nd of May 2005, two mobile phones were stolen from the same building during examinations and suspected that he was the culprit.

Major Adane Mensah told Amidu that if he was able to return the phones he would make sure that the case was not be referred to the Police.

Amidu accepted the condition and said he gave the two mobile phones to his friends for safekeeping at Ashaiman. He was, however, handed over to the Police who retrieved four mobile phones.

Amidu pleaded guilty and was sentenced to a year’s imprisonment. Meanwhile, two of the phones have been returned to their owners.
